 Re: [tips]how to improve Wlan
Need to see the solder points. I have a laptop antenna ready and waiting. One thing i did do was turn my wifi card over to so the chip is showing, as in your picture - that gave me a better signal! I also think mine is a different wifi card as it doesnt look quite the same, might see better with clearer pictures, without the tape. Look forward to your post

 Re: [tips]how to improve Wlan
Here is what I did and hope I can post all the pictures. I first cut away the antenna trace, about 1/4" and soldered a small diameter piece of 50 ohm coax cable to the antenna output and the shield of the coax to ground. The length of coax is not important since it is shielded it will have no effect on the antennas performance. I made it long enough to be easy to work with. I used an old WiFi antenna I had and just took it out of it's case. I soldered the center conductor to the antenna and cut back the shield. I used shrink sleeve to insulate it and just let it float in the bottom of the unit. As for the RT3070 chip, I took off the "RF can" and put some Shin-Etsu MicroSi Thermal Compound on the top of the chip, making sure there was enough to fill the void between the chip and the "RF can". This will allow the heat from the chip to dissipate though the can. You need to keep this circuit shielded for it to work properly so keep the can on the board..... Sorry, I can only post 3 pictures per post, so I will have to do another post with the rest of them there.

I get it from work, we have a 2000ft spool that got ordered and never got used. Send me a PM and we can figure out how many stamps it would take to send 24" in a envelope.

Take a look at the last of my posts with pictures, you will see the input sensitivity. I will doing a mod with a ceramic chip antenna as soon as I get them in from Spark Fun. after that I will do a proper test in our "Near Field" RF chamber and will post the data and pictures.

 Re: [tips]how to improve Wlan
With just a simple 10" 22 guage wire pigtail antenna tack on running up the side of the tablet... no etch cut I saw a 10-15DB improvement... this was enough for me to be stable... a proper antenna like teslabe is proposing I would expect to do better...
